Terms of service

These terms are the agreement between you and Andrew Sterling (“we”) for using Buto. By creating an account you agree to them and to the privacy policy.

1. Who can use Buto

You must be at least 16 years old. You need one account, in your own name, with accurate details. Keep your password private; you are responsible for activity on your account.

2. What Buto is, and isn’t

  • A place to find teammates, claim project briefs, build together and present the result in a portfolio.
  • Projects are unpaid collaborations between members. They are not jobs, internships or paid work, and nobody on Buto is your employer.
  • Project briefs are practice briefs, mostly written with AI. They are not real client work unless a brief says otherwise.
  • We don’t promise any outcome, such as finishing a project, a job offer or a qualification.

3. How projects work

  • You can be on up to 2 active teams at once. When every task assigned to you is done, you can mark your part as done: you stay on the team and keep your credit, and the seat frees up for a new project.
  • Only one team can claim a brief. The person who claims it becomes team lead and can lead at most two unfinished projects at once.
  • A claimed brief must have every required role filled within 3 days. If it doesn’t, the team closes and the brief goes back on the board. Teams are warned with a day left.
  • Briefs that nobody claims or saves for a week may be replaced with new ones.
  • If a team is one role away from full, the lead can add 2 days to the deadline once.
  • A team lead can return a brief to the board, and can remove a member before the project is complete; that member’s role reopens. Members can leave a team at any time. Please talk to each other first.
  • Members are asked for a short weekly check-in. Members who go quiet get a reminder, and after a week their lead is told.
  • Three kinds of brief. Most briefs have a fictional client invented for practice. Unofficial concept briefs ask you to redesign part of a real product; they are not affiliated with or endorsed by that company, and the company has not asked for or seen the work. Real client briefs come from organisations Buto has partnered with.
  • Unofficial concepts. Use your own mock-ups and mock data, don’t copy the company’s logos or brand assets, don’t scrape or use private APIs, and label the work as an unofficial concept wherever you share it. Never present it as official work for that company.
  • Real clients. Each real client brief says what the partner expects. Who may use the finished work, and how, is agreed between Buto and the partner before the brief is published and shown on the brief; you keep the right to show your part in your portfolio unless the brief says otherwise.

4. Your content

  • You keep ownership of everything you post: messages, files, designs, code, images and portfolio pieces.
  • You give us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, copy, display and process that content as needed to run Buto. For example: showing your portfolio to members, delivering messages, and making image previews. The licence ends when you delete the content or your account, except for team content that stays with the team as described in the privacy policy.
  • Team projects: work a team creates together belongs to its members jointly. Each member may show the project and their own contribution in their portfolio, here and elsewhere, with fair credit to teammates. Agree in writing as a team before using the work commercially.
  • Public portfolio: if you turn it on, you choose to publish your finished pieces to anyone on the internet. Only publish work your team agreed can be shown. You can turn it off at any time. While paid plans are on, a public portfolio stays online for members, Portfolio plan subscribers and people who have never had a paid plan. If your paid plan ends, it stays online for 30 more days, then pauses (the public link shows that it’s paused) until you subscribe to either plan again. Pausing never deletes your work.
  • Outside work and résumés: if you add work made outside Buto, you confirm you have the right to show it publicly (for example, permission from a client or employer) and that it contains nothing confidential. It is labelled as outside work and isn’t checked by Buto. We may remove anything that breaks these terms or someone else’s rights.
  • Only post content you have the right to share. Don’t upload anything that infringes someone else’s copyright, trademark or privacy, and don’t post anyone’s personal information without their permission.

5. Rules

Follow the community guidelines. In short: be respectful, be honest about your skills and contributions, don’t harass, spam, scam or impersonate anyone, and don’t try to break or misuse the service.

6. AI features

Some features use AI. Its output can be inaccurate or incomplete. Review it before you rely on it, and you are responsible for what you choose to publish. Don’t put other people’s private information into AI features.

6a. Feedback

Mentors and experienced members can leave private feedback on portfolio pieces. Feedback is advice, not an official assessment. Keep it constructive; the community guidelines apply.

7. Moderation

Anyone can report a message, comment, project or person. We may remove content or suspend accounts that break these terms or the guidelines. Where we can, we tell you why. If you think we got it wrong, email info.webuildtogether@gmail.com.

8. Free trial, subscription and price

  • Free account. Creating an account is free. Free members can browse briefs and teams, find and message people, and build their profile and portfolio. No payment details are needed.
  • Subscription. A monthly subscription (currently $9.99/month) lets you claim, join and start projects and use AI features. The full price, including any tax, is shown before you pay.
  • Automatic renewal. Once you subscribe, it renews every month on the same date until you cancel. You can see the next renewal date on the Plan & billing page.
  • Cancelling. Cancel any time in Plan & billing → Manage billing. You won’t be charged again and you keep access until the end of the period you already paid for.
  • Payments. Payments are handled by Stripe. We never see or store your full card number. If a payment fails, Stripe tries again for a short time and your access continues meanwhile; if it still can’t be collected, the subscription ends.
  • If you don’t subscribe. You keep your account, profile and portfolio, and you can finish the teams you’re already on. You can’t claim, join or start new projects or use AI features until you subscribe.
  • Price changes. We’ll email you at least 30 days before a new price applies to you, so you can cancel first if you prefer.
  • Under 18? Please get a parent or guardian’s permission before subscribing.
  • Refunds are covered in the refund policy. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer protection law.

9. Ending your account

You can delete your account at any time in Settings. We may suspend or close accounts that seriously or repeatedly break these terms, if you ask us to, or if the law requires it. If we close an account that has a paid plan, we cancel the subscription straight away and refund the most recent payment to the original payment method.

10. Disclaimers and liability

We work to keep Buto running and safe, but it is provided “as is”, without guarantees that it will always be available or error-free. Members are responsible for their own conduct and work. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for what members do. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer protection law that can’t be excluded.

11. Changes to these terms

If we make a change that matters, we will ask you to review and accept the new terms the next time you sign in. If you don’t agree, you can delete your account.

12. Law and contact

These terms are governed by the laws of Ontario, Canada, unless the law where you live gives you the right to rely on it instead. Questions: info.webuildtogether@gmail.com, or by mail at East 27th Street, Hamilton, Ontario L8V 3G1, Canada.
